IHSS&IWA26 / BRNO / CZECHIA / 23–28 August 2026 BOOK OF ABSTRACTS 110 NOM and Aquatic Systems Thursday, 27 August 2026 / Hall C To further evaluate regeneration efficiency, sodium sulphate and bicarbonate were also compared, the latter being of particular interest for remote communities due to its relative ease of disposal. Bottle-point isotherm studies using NOM-laden resins indicated regenerant affinity in the order of Cl- > HCO3- > SO42-, with mass-action isotherm model fitting the full range of experimental conditions (R2 = 0.92–0.97) as opposed to the Freundlich model. Using Python, batch stirred regeneration tests were fitted to diffusion mass transfer models coupled with mass action isotherms, with homogeneous surface diffusion model (HSDM) achieving a better fit (R2 = 0.94–0.99) than linear driving force. Determination of the HSDM diffusion constant (2.2-6.0 x 10-5 cm2/min) and mass action isotherm constants feeds into ongoing work to develop a column flow-through model for the regeneration process, allowing cost-effective comparison of different regeneration schemes (flow rate, duration, salt concentration, salt type) to facilitate optimization for different community needs.
