IHSS&IWA26 / BRNO / CZECHIA / 23–28 August 2026 BOOK OF ABSTRACTS 144 Soil Organic Matter, Caustobiolites, and Biochar Thursday, 27 August 2026 / Hall B characterized by wettable conditions with occasional slight to moderate repellency, and the 5–15 cm layer was almost entirely wettable. Significant relationships were found between the identified carbon pools and soil water repellency: 1) TOC400 content emerged as the primary driver of both the occurrence and severity of SWR, and this relationship appeared to be independent of soil depth; 2) a threshold of ~3% TOC400 was identified as critical for the onset of soil water repellency; 3) in contrast, the other carbon pools (ROC and TIC900) appeared to influence SWR only indirectly, likely through their effects on associated soil physical and chemical properties; 4) the TOC400/ROC ratio appears to be a promising indicator linking organic matter transformation dynamics to both the occurrence and severity of SWR in forest soils. Overall, this approach provides a promising framework for exploring potential links between the thermal stability and biological transformation of soil organic carbon pools and soil water repellency in forest ecosystems.
