IHSS&IWA26 / BRNO / CZECHIA / 23–28 August 2026 BOOK OF ABSTRACTS 160 NOM and Aquatic Systems Friday, 28 August 2026 / Hall C sites within carbon mesopores, due to their comparable molecular weight. Moreover, biopolymers can hinder adsorption kinetics through pore blocking and forming structural steric barriers, thus limiting the adsorption of the toxin into the pores. Wood-based activated carbons, characterized by their substantial mesopore volume, exhibited the lowest adverse effects of background NOM during blooms. An integrated examination of treatment processes indicates that artificial infiltration can act as a very efficient „biopolymer filter,“ forming a robust barrier for the elimination of at least some organic components and improving the quality of the collected surface water prior to potential membrane operations. Considering the dynamic fractional changes in NOM during PAC adsorption allows the appropriate selection of adsorbents (ideally mesoporous carbons) and facilitates the optimization of the adsorption process, to make it less affected by variations in raw water quality.
