BOOK OF ABSTRACTS 211 IHSS&IWA26 / BRNO / CZECHIA / 23–28 August 2026 Hall A Poster Session / NOM and Aquatic Systems development of Van Krevelen diagrams from EfOM samples, which we use to classify the changes in biomoleculelike structures in EfOM. We applied this method to analyze samples collected from wastewater utilities that do not remove nitrogen, partially remove nitrogen, and fully remove nitrogen. Our solid phase extraction method is able to recover 80% of EfOM (measured through organic carbon) in treated wastewater. We have found that EfOM samples collected from utilities that use partial denitrification are primarily composed of proteins. Our next steps are to apply these methods to disinfected samples that have undergone photolysis, to determine variations. This project will allow us to understand the importance of environmental and engineered transformations on EfOM structure, which will help inform the factors that drive the formation of emerging DBP classes.
