Specifically, DM SOM has multiple indicators of increased humification and hydrophobicity, generally in the more tightly bound regions of the SOM structure. DM amendments could function as a source of hydrophobic SOM in agricultural systems, potentially sequestering nutrients and preventing runoff into waterways. Likewise, hydrophobic SOM in DM could aid in nutrient retention in reconstructed wetlands using DM as a substrate, while beneficially redistributing DM on the landscape.
