BOOK OF ABSTRACTS 241 IHSS&IWA26 / BRNO / CZECHIA / 23–28 August 2026 Hall A Poster Session / Environment, Agriculture, and Forestry P4.15 Soil Enzymatic Activity as an Indicator of Biogeochemical Processes in Different Soil Types Kateřina Šťastná, Petra Závodská, Martina Klučáková, Zdenka Kozáková Faculty of Chemistry, Brno University of Technology, Purkyňova 464/118, 612 00 Brno, xcliskovak@vutbr.cz Soil enzymatic activity represents a sensitive indicator of microbial functioning and ongoing biogeochemical processes in soil systems. This study focuses on the assessment of key soil enzymes involved in carbon and nitrogen cycling, namely dehydrogenase, urease, and β-glucosidase, across three contrasting soil types. The selected enzymes provide insight into overall microbial oxidative activity (dehydrogenase) [1], nitrogen mineralization (urease) [2], and carbon turnover (β-glucosidase) [3]. Soil samples differing in their physicochemical properties were analyzed under controlled laboratory conditions to evaluate baseline enzymatic activity and to identify variations linked to soil characteristics. In addition, enzymatic activity is assessed in the presence of the pharmaceutical compound sulfapyridine, to investigate its impact on soil microbial processes. The study aims to evaluate how the presence of this antibiotic influence enzymatic activity across different soil types and to what extent soil properties modulate this effect. This work contributes to a better understanding of soil biochemical functioning and highlights the importance of enzymatic assays as tools for evaluating soil quality and ecosystem processes.
