A comprehensive kinetic model incorporating HOCl, NH2Cl, NHCl2, NCl3, and relevant intermediates was developed and successfully reproduced time-dependent profiles of oxidants, chlorine species, and nitrogenous products. Our results reveal that NCl3– NH2Cl interactions represent a previously underappreciated mechanism through which pre-chlorination–post-amination regimes can elevate NDMA formation, with implications for utilities employing sequential chlorination–chloramination in ammonia-rich waters.
