IHSS&IWA26 / BRNO / CZECHIA / 23–28 August 2026 BOOK OF ABSTRACTS 62 Technologies and Applications Tuesday, 25 August 2026 / Hall B+C Beyond direct applications, AHS act as catalysts for natural biogeochemical cycles. In anoxic sediment mesocosms, the addition of AHS was found to activate a „Microbial Carbon Pump“ (MCP). Experimental data showed an accumulation of 18.5 g/L of organic carbon in the surface layer over a sixweek period, with a carbon retention efficiency of 73%. The process is facilitated by a specialized microbial consortium (notably Firmicutes and sulfate-reducing bacteria), which transforms the labile fractions of AHS into stable microbial necromass, thereby accelerating the formation of persistent organic matter. Our research demonstrates that artificial humic substances synthesized via HTH provide a versatile platform for environmental engineering. By bridging fundamental polymer chemistry with soil microbiology, AHS offer measurable solutions for pollutant remediation and nutrient delivery, while providing a pathway to accelerate carbon stabilization.
