The hydrothermal humification technology (HTH) for producing artificial humic substances from waste biomass, was recognized as one of the IUPAC Top Ten Emerging Technologies in Chemistry 2021, as a technology that “may be a new technological means of producing humic substances HS similar to those found in soil for use as plant growth promotors” [1,2]. In 2019, Yang, Antoinetti et al. published the hydrothermal humification technology to synthesize artificial humic acid (A-HA) and artificial fulvic acid (A-FA) from straw, simulating natural geochemical processes [3]. During subsequent 7 years of intensive research, several processes of HTH were developed including hydrothermal treatment of different types of biomass in alkaline, acidic or even neutral aqueous solutions at high temperature (typically in the range of 156-225 oC) and elevated pressure [1-7 and references mentioned herein]. Our research team tested possible application of concentrated solutions of mineral acids containing biogenic elements in their structures (namely concentrated phosphoric acid) for hydrothermal treatment of spent coffee grounds or solid part of digestate for production of hydrochar rich on humic substances. The main advantage of this alternative hydrolytic process based on action of concentrated mineral acid on waste biomass is the costeffective performance of HTH at ambient pressure in common laboratory glassware or potentially in common glass-lined stirred chemical reactors and possible production of plant growth promotors based on combination of artificial humic substances together with NPK fertilizer for the direct application on arable soil.
